The Varneys!

Hello from the Varneys!

Scott and I (Mary) are both native northeasterners from NJ. However, we didn’t meet till years later in San Marcos, TX at a church plant at Southwest Texas State University. We both worked regular jobs and I attended the university although in the end, I left with only an MRS. degree :-D

We ministered together on the campus of SWTSU and led worship at the Great Commission Ministry church plant for several years before moving to San Antonio to be a part of a church plant there with the same association of churches. We’ve now been married 33 years and have a daughter, Morgan, who is now almost 20.

We moved from Texas 14 years ago to be a part of a church plant here in the Bay Area. Although we were leaving a really great solid church in San Antonio and were instrumental in a thriving young adult ministry, we knew God was moving us to California to be a part of something different. We were excited to see what God had for us here and, though things have not panned out as we had originally planned, He has definitely changed the course of our lives through that move.

It’s been a long journey these past seven years to find a church that was a good fit for us and that we could feel excited to be an integral part of. Ironically enough, Garden City was recommended by our previous pastor who knew we wanted to find something closer to us. We have been so thankful for that recommendation and have now been here at Garden City for a little over a year.

Scott currently has about five different businesses all centered around financial tax strategies, real estate, and life and long-term care which, through Covid, has launched into a nationwide venture since everything went online. I unofficially work with horses riding and doing some teaching and leading public trail rides. And there are pony rides for little kids too… :-D

We love the Monterey area and the redwoods. We love watching movies - many of them cheesy. So if you want to discuss good acting, we’re probably not the movie people for you. We love having people over to our house to get to know better. We’re totally into spending time with people doing the everyday sorts of activities of life like grocery shopping, reorganizing your house, or hair appointments. Lots of good fellowship to be had in those moments!

We look forward to meeting more of you and sharing life together!
