Jack Wamre!

A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of sitting down with beloved member Jack Wamre to learn a bit more about him. Jack has been a faithful member of Garden City for almost 5 years; you’ve seen Jack in his characteristic khakis and polo shirt, sunglasses on, looking too cool for school. Occasionally, Jack will show up on a Sunday in a suit, but he’d rather stick to the khakis so he doesn’t feel too much cooler than the rest of us.

Jack wears a suit on the occasional Sunday because of his job at the SAP Center working with the San Jose Sharks. He moved to San Jose from DC in 2018 on the recommendation from a coworker; he says it was a great career move, and he loves the Bay Area. For four years, he worked with season ticket holders, but last year he moved to working with suite holders… so Jack wears a suit when he has important meetings with clients, or there’s an event like Disney On Ice.

Originally from Dallas, people here keep asking him when he’s gonna wear his cowboy boots, so he bought some last summer while visiting family. I told him I’d wear mine on Sunday if he wears his! When he moved to the Bay, he immediately began looking for a church; he says he didn’t try Garden City right away because of the 4 pm meeting time (we were renting from a church that had their own morning services) but once he did, he felt right at home. Jack grew up in church, attending with his family in Texas, about an hour down the road from his grandmother, who is now 99! He was in musicals and plays as a child, and he still enjoys singing in a group. Church is all he’s known on Sundays, and it’s an important part of his life.

In college in DC, he was challenged to become a member of his church, because, in his eyes, he was still a member of his church back home in Dallas. But he says God taught him the importance of going all-in, and he values membership in his local church.

Jack has been working on contentment; he asks for our prayers, that he’d stop thinking so much about the future, and start enjoying each and every moment. He says most of the big changes in life are not what he planned, but that God orchestrated it all, and right now he’s feeling grateful for God’s provision. High School Jack would be blown away to see the life he has, and how everything worked out.

When asked about his favorite local food spot, Jack said Chipotle. When I pressed a bit more, he agreed that El Torito Azteca food truck in SJ is his favorite local spot, and a burrito truck across from Camino Brewery is another favorite. He says burritos are a way better bang for your buck than tacos. Jack loves burritos, San Jose, Garden City, his soft Garden City sweatshirt, and the songs we’ve written as a church. He’s happy to be here, and he’s thanking God one day at a time. Say hey to Jack if you see him!
